Carbon footprint calculation according to the GHG protocol

Calculating a company's carbon footprint is the cornerstone of sustainability reporting. Greenhouse gas reporting within the regulatory framework of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and in accordance with European sustainability reporting standards (ESRS) includes the disclosure of direct and indirect emissions in the company's value chain according to the GHG protocol.

GHG protocol for calculating a company's carbon footprint

Reporting requirements are categorized into Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol. The GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) is a comprehensive and globally recognized framework for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions.

The GHG Protocol is a collaboration between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). It is the first internationally recognized framework for calculating a company's carbon footprint, laying the foundation for subsequent standards, including ISO 14064.

Difference between GHG Protocol and ISO 14064

The GHG Protocol defines specific categories for classifying emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) which have become a global standard. ISO 14064 recognises and uses these categories but focuses more on ensuring the quality and credibility of the data.

In practice, both approaches are often used together: the GHG Protocol serves as a guide for concrete calculations and categorization of emissions, while ISO 14064 helps ensure that the entire measurement and reporting process is consistent with international quality standards.

GHG protocol

The GHG Protocol is more like a detailed manual that provides companies with specific instructions and tools for calculating emissions. It includes detailed calculators, emission factors, and guidelines for various industries.

ISO 14064

ISO 14064 is a formal international standard that sets out general requirements and principles for measuring and reporting emissions.

A practical approach to calculating a company's carbon footprint

The ESG ON team of consultants adapts to specific needs for an independent carbon footprint calculation, covering all three emission ranges. ESG ON allows the generation of two reports:
